
Jazmine Sullivan was born and was raised from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Pam Her mother, who was a former backup singer for Philadelphia International Records. When she was five, her father was appointed as Philadelphia's Historic Strawberry Mansion curator. She and her family moved later into this historical building. In 2005, a Philadelphia High School for the Creative and Performing Arts graduate and a top student in the field of vocal music. Sullivan began her singing career as a contralto in the children's choirand just a couple of years later, in the adult group. Sullivan experienced only a small amount of secular music. She relates that she was in her 11th year when someone requested her to sing in a solo at the church. She wasn't yet ready for. At that time, McDonald's held a contest for kids in big cities. Stevie Wonder sang her part during his 13th birthday celebration. Sullivan was the first to sign her contract with Jive Records when she was 15. She maintained a working relationship with Missy Elliott and produced many of the tracks in her debut album including the buzz single "Backstabbers" which was produced by Timbaland and composed by Elliott.
